Mystical Golf - owner and operator of three acclaimed layouts in Myrtle Beach - has further enhanced the "Scottish feel" of its Wizard course by adding St. Andrews-style sod facing to five greenside bunkers and rebuilding 20 fairway hazards into pot bunkers. The par-72, 6,721-yard shot-maker's design is now even more reminiscent of the classic, wind-swept courses in the U.K. In addition to the dramatic bunkering redesign, it features heather-grassed mounds, rollicking fairways and striking elevation changes. Trademark stone bridges and a castle-style clubhouse completes the "Old World" ambience.

No other locale in the golfing world showcases the handiwork of such a wide array of acclaimed course designers as does Myrtle Beach. The Grand Strand boasts a virtual “all-star architect team” – Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Pete Dye, Tom Doak, Robert Trent Jones, Rees Jones, Greg Norman, Davis Love III, Mike Strantz, Dan Maples – the list goes on and on. Born into a family whose roots in golf course construction date back to the 19th century, Dan Maples continued the legacy of his ancestors in style with the Mystical Golf trio – The Witch, Man O'War and The Wizard.

My three previous trips to Myrtle Beach were underwhelming. The golf was not memorable, traffic was a nightmare and on one trip back spasms prevented me from playing altogether (though I can't blame that on anything but bad luck). It turns out I was just playing the wrong golf courses at the wrong time of year. There are more than 100 courses on the Grand Strand and an almost infinite number of stay-and-play packages available year-round. My buddy and I hit the jackpot with the threesome of The Witch, The Wizard and Man O' War, owned and operated by Mystical Golf.
