This is my first trip to Myrtle Beach in arguably its busiest season, and it's easy to see why this is such a sought-after golf destination every spring, especially for those in the Midwest and East Coast. When my plane left Michigan yesterday, there were semi-snowflakes flying outside. It was just a quick less-than-two-hour flight, and within an hour of landing I was on the first tee at The Witch Golf Links in Conway, S.C., just 20 minutes from downtown. That's about as smooth a trip from snow country to golf country gets this time of year. The Witch is one of the dozens of underrated golf courses in the region because it's away from the beach. It's fun from the white tees (6,300 yards). It won’t beat you up, and there’s not a house or condo in sight. I saw several alligators and a fivesome of wild turkeys that tried to play through on our front nine.

Given the names The Witch, Man O'War and The Wizard, you know these golf courses are not going to be easy. In fact, the novice golfer might have a little trouble even getting the ball on the green with some of these holes. Luckily, Mystical Golf is offering the ‘Midweek Special' in April to all three golf courses, which will ensure an improved golf game.

It’s very easy to fall under the spell of The Witch, one of the most challenging, beautiful golf courses in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The superbly conditioned Witch is actually part of a triumvirate of Myrtle Beach courses — also including Man O’ War and The Wizard — owned and operated by Mystical Golf, which specializes in value-driven stay-and-play packages. The three outstanding, distinct courses were designed by renowned course architect Dan Maples, who did a masterful job of weaving the 6,796-yard, par-71 Witch through 500 acres of pristine property, most of it natural wetlands filled with numerous species of beautiful flowers and plants.
The environmentally sensitive Witch, which opened in 1989, is considered Mystical’s signature course. Even the 4,000 feet of raised wooden bridges traversing The Witch’s wetland areas, lakes and Waccamaw Swamp are environmentally sensitive. The Witch’s tee markers, which resemble pointed witches hats, are actually pointed stumps of cypress trees collected from the swamp comprising much of the front nine.
